The Original Shaft

The original shaft of the Elson Mine now sits abandoned but not forgotten.  The railroad needed to cut the corner off the mountain here and the shaft was in the way.  A new and bigger shaft was dug just across the way.  The hoist house and work shed were moved but the tower was left.

As it looks today. Parts of the mine were used in the new shaft with the rest left where it was.  The ore car tracks were ripped up and some of it still lays in the front of the chute.  The tailings from the old mine and some from the new were dumped around the shaft site. The hoist engine still is in place, in  pieces now though.

The ore delivery cart was left on site and upended. It rode up on flat steel rails on the wood beams and was pulled and then tipped upwards to dump its ore load.
